Belgium vignette guide

Belgium Vignette for German Drivers

Drivers from Germany who use Belgian motorways or regional roads — whether for transit to France, the Benelux, the UK ferry ports, or leisure trips — will need the planned digital Belgium vignette from May 2027.

This guide covers what German motorists should know before crossing the border: validity options, indicative prices, and how enforcement applies to German-registered plates.

Belgium vignette prices

The following prices are indicative and based on current planning. Annual rates depend on the vehicle, and shorter validity periods are available for occasional users and visitors.

Belgium as a transit corridor

Many German routes to France, the Channel ports or western Europe pass through Belgium. The vignette applies to the roads covered by the system, not only to vehicles stopping in Belgium.

Passenger cars up to 3.5 tonnes are in scope. Motorcycles, trucks (separate kilometre-charge system) and emergency vehicles are expected to be exempt.

Which vignette period makes sense

Choose based on how often you use Belgian roads in a year:

  • Annual — around €100 if you regularly drive in Belgium
  • 10 days — around €12 for a holiday or business trip
  • 1 day — around €9 for a single transit or stopover

Typical routes from Germany

  • Aachen area → Liège → westbound (E40 corridor)
  • Cologne/Düsseldorf direction → Brussels or Antwerp
  • Saarland → Luxembourg/Belgium cross-border travel
  • Transit to Calais or Dunkirk ferry routes via Belgium

Digital registration for DE plates

You register your German licence plate online when purchasing. There is nothing to affix to the vehicle. ANPR enforcement is planned on both motorways and selected regional roads.

Buy through official channels once sales open — the vignette is not yet available.

Frequently asked questions

Do German-registered cars need a Belgium vignette?
Yes. Foreign passenger cars are expected to need a valid vignette on covered roads, including German-registered vehicles.
I only transit Belgium in one day — what do I need?
A one-day vignette is planned for occasional use. Confirm final products before travel once the system is live.
Does my Austrian or Swiss vignette cover Belgium?
No. Belgium operates its own planned digital vignette system, separate from Austria, Switzerland or other countries.
