Belgium vignette guide

The Belgium Vignette

The Belgium vignette is a planned digital road vignette for passenger cars that use Belgian motorways and regional roads. Instead of a physical windscreen sticker, it is expected to be an electronic registration linked directly to your licence plate.

This guide brings together everything currently known about the Belgium vignette: what it is, who will need one, how much it is expected to cost, and how compliance will be checked.

What the Belgium vignette is

Under the planned system, buying a vignette registers your licence plate in a central database. There is no sticker to display and nothing to fix to your windscreen.

Because the vignette is tied to the plate, validity travels with the vehicle. Enforcement is expected to be fully automatic, comparing plates read on the road with the register of valid vignettes.

Who will need a Belgium vignette

The vignette is expected to apply to passenger cars up to 3.5 tonnes, whether they are registered in Belgium or abroad.

  • Passenger cars up to 3.5 tonnes
  • Belgian-registered vehicles
  • Foreign-registered vehicles
  • Motorcycles, tractors, coaches and emergency vehicles are expected to be exempt

Expected prices

Indicative annual prices start at around €100, with a reduced rate for electric vehicles and a higher rate for older, higher-emission cars. Short-term periods are planned for occasional users and visitors.

See the dedicated Belgium vignette price page for the full breakdown of annual and short-term rates.

How enforcement will work

Compliance is planned to be checked with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and mobile control units, without toll booths or physical inspections.

Once the tolerance period ends, driving without a valid vignette may result in a fine.
