Belgium Vignette for Foreign Cars

Do foreign cars need a Belgium vignette? Based on current planning, yes: foreign-registered passenger cars are expected to need a valid vignette to use covered Belgian roads, exactly like Belgian-registered vehicles.

This page explains what the planned system means for visitors driving into Belgium from abroad.

Who needs a Belgium vignette?

The vignette is expected to apply to most passenger cars. Certain vehicle categories are expected to be exempt.

Required

  • Passenger cars up to 3.5 tonnes
  • Belgian-registered vehicles
  • Foreign-registered vehicles

Exempt

  • Motorcycles
  • Tractors
  • Coaches
  • Emergency vehicles
  • Police and defence vehicles

The vignette applies to foreign vehicles

The Belgium vignette is expected to apply regardless of where a car is registered. Visitors from neighbouring countries and beyond would need a valid vignette in the same way as local drivers.

Short-term options for visitors

Because many foreign drivers only use Belgian roads for a short trip, short-term vignettes are planned so visitors do not have to buy a full year.

  • 1 day — for a quick crossing or day trip
  • 10 days — for a short holiday
  • 1 or 2 months — for longer stays

How checks work for foreign plates

The vignette is linked to the licence plate, and ANPR cameras are planned to read foreign plates just as they read Belgian ones. There is nothing to display in the car.

Before you travel

Details of the planned system may still change. Before driving into Belgium, always confirm the current requirements and buy any required vignette through official channels.
